Syria lies, now as always, at the fulcrum of the Middle East, controlling trade traffic and military ambition between the Mediterranean and the East. Caravan routes criss-cross its boundaries, and might cities grew up where weary - but wealthy - travellers needed to break their journey.

We travel between the two great rivers which flank the desert, making life possible, and visit remote outpost forts from the Roman, Byzantine and Crusader periods, as well as some of the earliest prehistoric settlements. Our Guide Lecturers will explain the chronology, and relate ancient strategies to contemporary ones. Explore the unchanging souks, ride on a Hejaz steam train (fired just for us), and watch the sunset and sunrise at Palmyra (we spend two days here). This is currently our most popular tour.
