AITO - through its sustainable Tourism (ST) Committee encourages members to practice RT as they individually see appropriate. AITO believes that by advising, encouraging and assisting members on both the broader and more specific issues, we facilitate our membership to operate individually with an efficient an ST policy as possible.
As an Association we also take great pride in the fact that we regard ourselves as industry leaders in the practise of 'hands on' ST.
Through fundraising auctions and ST workshops held at the AITO Overseas Conferences over the past three years, we have supported a number of initiatives to improve the life and environment in various countries around the world. Click on the link to learn more...

Sipnara Handicrafts Development Centre in Galle, Sri Lanka
At AITO's conference in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in November 2003, delegates raised over £11,000 to provide a centre where the poorest women of the community could learn a craft and sell their wares, thus improving the living conditions for them and their families. Since January 2007, The National Crafts Council has been running a handicrafts development centre in Galle and, with the help of AITO members' funds, has successfully run training programmes in lace-making, rush & reed crafts, woodcarving, mask-making and other local crafts. Courses are now only offered when there are additional funds. Visitors are welcome at the NCC Sipnara Handicrafts Centre, situated near the Old Entrance Gate to Galle Fort.

Sri Lanka School Cricket Equipment
At the AITO Conference in Sri Lanka AITO presented 4 sets of cricket kit to Sigiriya school. Some of the AITO delegates took the kits to the school personally and were overwhelmed by the reception. It was a not a school day but the children turned up en masse in immaculate school uniform, and danced and sang in celebration. Look out for the next generation of cricket heroes!
