Although less travelled than many areas of Europe, holidays in East and South-East Europe have no less to offer. The southern coastlines rival some of the finest in the Mediterranean while the north offers landscapes to satisfy even the most discerning of winter-sports enthusiasts. The fascinating blend of religions, culture and history means there’s plenty to explore from medieval churches to modern monuments. Discover the diversity for yourself and let an AITO operator help you create your Eastern European adventure.

  • Wander through the walled medieval city of Dubrovnik visiting the monasteries, museums and cathedrals and then explore the Dalmatian Islands on a Croatian Adriatic cruise
  • Travel one third of the world on the legendary Trans-Siberian Railway from London to Vladivostok, covering over 8000 miles and crossing 11 time zones
  • Discover Bulgaria’s dramatic scenery as you hike the Rila Mountains and climb the highest mountain in the Balkan Peninsula, Musala Peak, before descending to the ancient Rila Monastery
  • Relax on the sun-kissed beaches of Cyprus and enjoy a scenic walk through the beautiful pine woods and waterfalls of the Troodos Mountains

Much of East and South-East Europe can be visited year-round, though the warmer summer months between May and September are most popular. July and August are peak months, as a rule, and so best avoided if you don’t like crowds. Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Northern Belarus and Poland can be very cold and dark during the winter months of November to March, and you may find some hotels and attractions closed. Skiing is popular in winter, although the limited number of daylight hours might not appeal.
