Top of the list for most visitors to the Azores is whale and dolphin watching. Twenty-four of the planet¡¯s 80 species of whales and dolphins have been sighted off the coast of the Azores making this one of the best places in the world to whale watch. The most frequently spotted cetaceans are Sperm whale, Short-finned pilot whale, Common dolphin, Bottlenose dolphin, Atlantic spotted dolphin and Risso dolphin.


The whale watching season runs all year, with the main season being between Apr-Oct. Although dolphins can be seen all year round, whales are less frequent during the winter months. Each excursion starts with a 10-minute briefing by a marine biologist, introducing the cetaceans of the Azores and discussing their habitat, communication and behavioural patterns.

¡ö 7-nights accommodation at the Furnas Lake Apartments, Furnas (self catering)
¡ö Group ¡®B¡¯ car hire. 45-minutes drive to the whaling base in Ponta Delgada.

¡ö Briefing by a marine biologist (c.20- minute talk).
¡ö Four 3-hour whale and dolphin watching excursions.


Notes for Whale & Dolphin Holidays:
¡ö Zodiac boats (small, rigid hull inflatables carrying up to 12 people) are used.
¡ö Excursions depart at 08:30 or 13:30 ¨C schedules to be advised locally depending on weather conditions.
¡ö Transfers to/from the whaling base are not included.
¡ö We cannot guarantee that you will see a cetacean but it is unlikely that you should be so unlucky.
