Norwegian fjords have an undisputed ‘wow’ factor. Whilst many people decide to explore them from the water, we give you the opportunity to explore them on a self-drive holiday, with pre-booked and exceptionally comfortable accommodation. Exploring at your own pace has many benefits as does the lack of traffic on Norwegian roads and on this new 7-night itinerary, you’ll be ‘wowed’ at every corner as the scenery just keeps getting better and better.

Itinerary

Day 1 Fly from the UK to Bergen either direct from Gatwick or via Oslo from Heathrow. Collect your vehicle from the airport and drive into the city centre for an overnight stay at Hotel Augustin or similar (depending on your flight, you may arrive in time for an evening meal otherwise it will be a late evening check in).
Day 2 Set off from Bergen after breakfast and cross the mountains at Kvam, descending to Hardangerfjord. Enjoy a leisurely drive admiring the views along the fjord before taking one of two routes across the slender stretch of water that is Sorfjorden. Perhaps drive up to Kvanndal and take the short hop by ferry to Utne, then another ferry across to Kinsarvik and drive south to Lofthus. Alternatively, from Utne, drive south along the shoreline of Sorfjorden to Odda then continue north to Lofthus. Your accommodation for the next two nights is at Hotel Ullensvang.
Day 3 A day at leisure to enjoy the fantastic variety of facilities at Hotel Ullensvang. Try the indoor swimming pool or brave a dip in the fjord; play tennis; spend time in the fitness suite; go kayaking; hiking or rent a bicycle and explore.
Day 4 Depart Lofthus and trace the coastline north. Continue through Brimnes to Eidfjord and perhaps visit the Nature Centre. Turn back to Brimnes and take the car ferry across to Bruravik, travelling north to Voss with its attractive lakeside setting. The striking church is well worth a visit with the interior as unusual as its exterior. From Lake Vangsvatnet continue to Flam for an overnight stay at the Flamsbrygga Hotel – and perhaps take a trip on the famous scenic railway.
Day 5 If not riding the railway today, set off from the Flamsbrygga and drive through beautiful countryside to Vangsnes, where a 12m hilltop statue of a legendary Viking chief looks down over the jetty. From here take the ferry across to Dragsvik, drive to Balestrand on the shores of Sognefjord and check in at Hotel Kviknes, home for the next two nights.
Day 6 A day at leisure to explore Balestrand on foot or by bicycle, make use of the facilities at your hotel, go hiking in the mountains, take a boat trip or perhaps rent fishing equipment or a rowing boat and head down to the water.
Day 7 Drive west along the fjord, still admiring the scenery, to Lavik and take the ferry across to Oppdal, ready for the leisurely drive south back to Bergen. Overnight in Bergen at Hotel Augustin or similar.
Day 8 If travelling home later today, you’ll still have time for a little shopping or sightseeing before heading to the airport. Drop off your vehicle before taking a late afternoon/evening flight back to the UK, either direct or via Oslo, depending on your chosen route. You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to things to pass the time in Bergen so why not consider extending your stay for another night or two?
