Whale Watchers, New England by Regina Asmutis-Silvia

The Massachusetts coastline of New England offers some of the best whale watching in North America. Our base for this wonderful short break will be the picturesque waterfront town of Plymouth. We have one full day and two half day whale watching trips planned in and around Stellawagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary in search of whales.

The cold nutrient rich waters and productive fishing grounds of the Gulf of Maine attract whales in search of prey like Sand Lance, Herring and Mackerel. Every year from April to November, the whales are found concentrated in places where the food is, including Stellawagen Bank, so productive it was designated as national marine sanctuaries in 1992. Humpback Whales are natural show offs and a favourite with whale watchers. If we spot them, we hope to witness some of their unique bubblenet feeding behaviours – as well as breaching, spyhopping, flipper slapping and lobtailing. There is also a great chance of encountering other spectacular wildlife, including dolphins, porpoise, Basking Sharks, Ocean Sunfish and a myriad of sea birds.

You will also have some free time to explore the historic sites of Plymouth. Learn about life in a 1627 Pilgrim village and relive the voyage of the Pilgrims across the Atlantic on the replica of the Mayflower II.
