This journey from Atlantic to Pacific coast is the perfect journey for those wanting to experience the diversity of Latin America: explore the vibrant city of Rio - famous for its joie-de-vivre, golden beaches and panoramic views; wander the walkways among the thundering falls at tropical Iguassú; discover exotic La Paz - Bolivia’s captivating and photogenic capital; pass through the picturesque rural backroads of the Bolivian altiplano; navigate Lake Titicaca’s cobalt-blue waters by boat to the remote Sun Island and see the treasures of the Inca empire in Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu in Peru.
The Itinerary
Day 1: UK clients depart on overnight flight, arriving following morning.
Days 2-3: Explore Rio, one of the world’s most beautiful cities, famous for the joie-de-vivre of its inhabitants and beach-based hedonism. Watch - or join in - the beach volleyball and samba parades, and feast the eye on the magnificent views.
Days 4-5: Fly to Iguazú Falls on the border with Argentina. 275 individual falls crash down over a 60m cliff in a cacophony of sound and spray - we tread the narrow walkways that give an intimate view of this sub-tropical paradise.
Day 6: Drive to Asunción, capital of Paraguay and a quirky mix of indigenous, Spanish, Mennonite and Korean culture.
Days 7-9: Fly to La Paz, lofty capital of Bolivia, where indian markets spill out onto the street and the daily drama of this city’s vibrant life can be easily discovered on foot - a walking tour is included. Optional excursions to the Chacaltaya ski slope or the ruins at Tiwanaku.
Day 10: By bus across the russet altiplano to the sapphire-blue waters of Lake Titicaca. Boat trip to the deeply traditional Sun Island. Overnight in the shore-side village of Copacabana.
Day 11: Continue around the lake to Puno, Peru.
Day 12: Full day scenic coach journey to Cusco, with Lunch, and stops at the museum of Pucará, the extraordinary ruins of the temple to Viracocha at Raqchi and the ornate baroque church of Andahuayllas.
Day 13: City tour of Cusco’s well-preserved buildings of the Inca and colonial eras. Shop in the colourful markets and dip into the huge range of bars and restaurants.
Day 14: At leisure in Cusco. In the region there are opportunities for optional horse-riding, biking and river-rafting.
Day 15: Visit the beautiful Sacred Valley, seeking out Inca temples and fortresses. Overnight there.
Day 16: By train through a narrow and dramatic gorge to the sub-tropical mountains home to the citadel of Machu Picchu. Overnight in the village nearby, opportunity to visit the ruins twice (second visit is optional).
Day 17: Return to Cusco by rail.
Day 18: Fly to Lima, a vast metropolis, with wealthy mansions, dirt-poor slums and corners of bohemian folksiness. Walking tour of some of the grand monuments and churches.
Day 19: UK clients depart, arriving day 20, Fri.
