Travelling to the icy wilderness of the Polar Regions is an experience never to be forgotten. More shades of blue than you ever thought existed can be seen in the gigantic icebergs, ice plates and beautiful fjords, and the wildlife spotting opportunities are second to none. Many AITO operators have specialised in sharing the wonders of the Arctic and Antarctic with travellers for years, and their specialist knowledge will ensure you make the most of this unique and amazing experience.
- Search for albatross, whales, dolphins and penguins on a polar expedition cruise ship and visit the most isolated museum in the world, the former British Scientific Station on the Antarctic Peninsula
- Voyage to the Svalbard Archipelago, just 600 miles from the North Pole, home to arctic foxes, reindeer and the majestic polar bears
- Follow in Shackleton’s footsteps from Ushuaia to South Georgia and visit the fur seal colony
- Brave the cold and dive with the incredible king penguins in South Georgia, or dive among ice plates and snorkel with seals in the Arctic
- Learn the art of ‘mushing’ huskies on an adventure husky safari in Lapland and sleep on ice as you stay in the incredible Jukkasjarvi Ice Hotel
The climate and landscapes of these regions are rarely stable and never predictable, and all trips leave you somewhat in the hands of mother nature. The southern Polar Regions can only be visited during the summer (between November and March) as pack ice during the winter makes ship access impossible. December and January are the warmest months, with up to 20 hours of sunlight each day and also this is the best time to see the penguins hatching eggs and feeding their chicks. Early summer (November) is the best time to see the penguin courtship rituals, whereas whale watching is best in late summer (February and March).
The northern polar regions have been populated for thousands of years and are more accessible than the Antarctic regions. Cruises only operate during the Summer, between June and September, but the Northern Lights are best seen during the winter months.
