This stunning sub-region of Asia consists of eleven countries on the mainland and archipelago, all with their own unique character. The strong influence of Buddhism and Hinduism, the two main religions, has shaped the culture and much of the landscape in this spectacular part of the world. The tropical climate and relative low cost of living make it a veritable playground for anyone wanting a winter holiday.

With so much water around, the archipelago is a diver’s paradise and there are a number of specialist resorts in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. The awe-inspiring temples and monuments make the Asian cities of Cambodia, Thailand, Burma and Vietnam a rich in culture and history. For those who want a relaxing beach holiday the islands provide miles of unspoilt beaches and the major cities in Singapore and Hong Kong offer a sophisticated east-meets-west experience where shopping and going out are a must.

  • Admire the vast and ancient temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, relics of the Khmer Empire and a magnificent symbol of the country today
  • Learn the secrets of Asian cuisine on a Thai cookery course in northern Thailand and impress your friends back home with classics like Thai green curry and Pad Thai
  • Go diving in Malaysia and see hammerhead sharks and green turtles in one of the richest marine environments in the Indo-Pacific basin
  • Sail down the Perfume River in Vietnam and enjoy spectacular scenery alongside the country’s French colonial legacy of fabulous food and accommodation
  • Stay in the luxury Island Shangri La hotel centrally located on Hong Kong Island. Take in the breathtaking views of the city and harbour and stock up on designer labels in this shoppers paradise

Generally the best time to visit South-East Asia is between October and April when for most of the region the weather is cooler and drier. January and February are often the driest months and are followed by the hot part of the dry season where temperatures can soar to unbearable heights. The rainy season from May to October often brings monsoons and flooding. Although travelling in the rainy season is generally not bad, unpaved roads may be impassable and the humidity can be oppressive
